Pull up a corner of old carpet in Westmoreland and there's a decent chance you'll find wood underneath. Plenty of the older homes in this corner of Sumner County are a mix: carpet in the bedrooms and den, original or refinished hardwood in the hall and front rooms.
That mix is why a lot of our visits up here cover two kinds of floor in one trip. It's also why you want someone who knows the difference.
Carpet in older homes
Carpet that's been down a long time holds a lot. Years of dust and pollen settle deep, and the red clay and limestone mud from these hills get tracked in every wet season. Old carpet also has less give left in it, so it needs a gentle hand.
The tech walks the house with you, checks the carpet's condition, and pre-treats the traffic paths and spots. Then a light carbonated solution goes down, and the bubbles work grit loose from low in the pile so the machine can pull it out. No soap means nothing sticky left to catch new dirt, and the carpet is dry by the time we've finished the wood floors. Less water also means less strain on old backing and seams. The carpet cleaning page has more on the method.
The wood floors
Hardwood needs something else entirely. Steam and heavy water raise the grain, cloud the finish and swell the boards at the seams. Our hardwood floor cleaning is a pH-neutral clean with barely any moisture, safe for finished, engineered and prefinished wood. It takes off the grime and the dull film that years of mopping leave, and the grain shows again.
To be plain about it: this is cleaning. We don't sand and we don't refinish. If the finish is worn through to bare wood, a refinisher is your next call, and we'll tell you so. Most floors that just look tired come most of the way back with a good cleaning, though. Doing both floors on one visit saves you a second appointment, and the crew plans the order so nobody tracks across a room that was just cleaned.
