The upstairs of a house keeps its own kind of record. Downstairs gets the guests and the traffic you notice. Upstairs quietly collects the rest: pets padding between bedrooms, kids running the same hallway loop, the same eight inches of every stair taking every footstep.
That was the situation at a Gallatin home our technician Michael visited this spring. The homeowner left a short review afterward calling the visit professional and efficient. We're writing it up because we see this exact house, give or take a dog, all the time.
What we found when we got upstairs
Nothing about this home looked neglected. The owners have pets, they vacuum regularly, and they'd handled accidents quickly when they happened. Still, the upstairs felt heavier than the rest of the house. There was a faint odor in the hallway, easy to miss at first and harder to ignore the longer you stood there.
The staircase showed the classic pattern. Every step was darker down the middle where feet land, and the edges still looked clean, which made the contrast stand out. Run a hand over the treads and the fibers in that center strip felt packed down. The pets followed their people up and down those stairs all day, pressing soil and body oil in along the same path.
The hallway was where the smell lived. No big stains, just a couple of spots the homeowner had already treated. They'd faded but hadn't disappeared, and one kept coming back a few days after each cleaning. When a spot reappears like that, the source is almost always below the surface, in the backing or the pad, and it wicks back up as the carpet dries.
The bedrooms looked even but didn't feel even. Some sections underfoot were softer and some firmer, a sign of buildup settling unevenly.
My opinion, for what it's worth: stairs are the most under-cleaned carpet in most houses. If you can only do one area, do the stairs before the living room.
How Michael worked through it
He started on the stairs, one step at a time.
- He pre-treated the heaviest areas first: the center of each stair, then the hallway spots, then anywhere the odor was stronger. The treatment is made to break down the organic material behind pet odor.
- After letting it dwell, he worked it into the fibers with steady, controlled agitation. On stairs you can't be rough, or you'll fuzz the edges of the treads.
- Then came the main clean, with our carbonated solution and as little water as the job allowed. That matters most on stairs, since excess moisture has nowhere to go but down into the pad.
- Finally, the loosened soil and the solution both came back out, so nothing was left to wick up or catch new dirt. The hallway spots that kept returning cleared here.
The homeowner stayed close and asked questions, mostly about the stairs, and Michael talked through each step as he went.
We walked the upstairs together once he finished. From across the room the change was subtle. Up close it was obvious. The dark stripe down the stairs had blended back in with the edges, and the packed fibers had loosened. The hallway just smelled like nothing, which is how a clean house should smell. The bedroom carpet felt the same underfoot everywhere. Nobody had to route around the staircase for the rest of the day, either. It was walkable before Michael had the van packed.

- Vacuum the routes your pets use most, going over stairs and hallways twice.
- Blot accidents with cool water and a white towel, and don't scrub.
- Go easy on store-bought sprays. More product usually means more residue.
- Watch any spot that has smelled before. If it comes back, it needs a deeper treatment.
